Those are snapshots of yours truly. I haven’t always been so cool. As you’ll find out on any social networking site, I grew up in this tiny town called “East Longmeadow” on the western side of Massachusetts. It was a quiet suburban town of roughly 10,000 white people. I’m an only-child born to immigrant parents who studied their pants off to get here, then risked their pants to finally succeed, and once they had saved enough, bought flying pants for their families to all come over here. We have very different outlooks, seeing as I’ve always had a comfortable number of pants. For the record though, those bright, yellow sweatpants I wore everyday in 3rd grade gave me some perspective on the value of pants.

Like any other Chinese child of immigrants, I was slightly spoiled, and carried forth the torch to reach some of my parents dreams. Really to understand, I guess you need to read/watch Amy Tan’s Joy Luck Club and mix all the stories up from each of the four daughters. I tried so many different things growing up… violin, piano, karate, swimming, gymnastics, syncronized swimming, math club. It’s always been inobvious if I have the ability to really follow-through with the vast number of things I show an immediate talent for. I often feel i lead a life of serendipity, “the effect by which one accidentally discovers something fortunate, especially while looking for something else entirely”. Some people just call this ADD.

Now that I’m all grown up, some patterns have actually emerged. It seems I like people, and I make friends easily, but I wouldn’t say I make friends indiscriminately. I’m picky. You should feel honored. *laugh* just messin’. Honestly, I just have a decent intuition about who I’d mesh well with, and that’s usually:

  • Arrogant/Geeky/Goofy/Well-dressed/Tall White Males
  • Children of immigrants or native americans with a comfortable number of pants
  • People who have worked or interned at Tech companies (I’ve decided the interview process for software engineers must closely match my friend-making process)
  • Girly-girls who smile alot and make fun of me while I make fun of them
  • More adult patterns to come. its past my adult bedtime.
